why study ortho?

Orthodontics is probably the one specialty which is most removed from the education we receive as dentists. This is quite surprising when we consider the important role orthodontics plays in the management of malocclusion, dental function and, of course, aesthetics. A sound understanding of orthodontic principles will enhance your clinical practice, and help to bring together your range of skills to deliver better outcomes for your patients.

Benefits of studying ortho

Learn the science, not the system

Most orthodontic courses or CPD events are run by commercial organisations who have an interest in their own product or 'system'. This potentially introduces huge bias into the teaching delivered, and can often limit your learning to that system only. But what if you plan to use to use a different orthodontic appliance? We aim to teach the biological and biomechanics basis of orthodontic assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning. By understanding the science of orthodontics, you will be able to apply your orthodontic knowledge to any case you wish to treat, whether that is with aligners, fixed braces or any other orthodontic appliance.

Plan Multi-disciplinary Treatment

The UK population is becoming more diverse, and patients present with a wide range of different treatment needs and desires. Our patients have increasingly higher expectations of the standard of dental or orthodontic treatment, and the ability to deliver these expectations is therefore becoming equally important. We aim to give you an understanding of occlusion, orthodontic tooth movement, and how to plan the restorative phase before any orthodontic treatment is even started. Through engagement with our teaching, mentoring and resources your skill set  will improve and orthodontic knowledge will increase, and the ability to treat plan multi-disciplinary care will become a priceless asset.

Diversify your practice

General dentistry can become monotonous and modern patients demand more than just basic treatment to treat dental disease. More and more patients are seeking cosmetic treatment, of which orthodontics forms a large proportion. Having the skill set to deliver in-demand treatment enhances your ability to attract new patients, develop your practice and enjoy a more satisfying clinical life.

Reduce complaints and Litigation

One of the biggest fears dentists have is that we don't know what we don't know. It can be difficult to make a clinical decision without having access to the correct information, and there is no better example of that than orthodontics. Without an understanding of proper orthodontic assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, it is likely that we will make mistakes which give rise to complains and litigation. Orthodontic treatment is a rising cause of litigation in the UK, so it has never been more important to ensure we are well protected. Our evidence-based teaching is based on sound principles which have been successfully used by UK specialists and consultants for many years, and will allow you to practice orthodontics safely, ethically and with reduced anxiety
